Jeffrey Eggleston won the Pittsburgh Marathon this morning for the men with an unofficial time of 2:16:40. Eggleston, a native of Rochester, NY and a former runner at the University of Virginia, was brought in by race organizers to be the rabbit, or pace-setter, but he broke away from the pack at the 24-mile mark to earn the victory.
The women's marathoner winner was Bekele Delelecha of Ethiopia with a time of 2:35:34
Nicholas Kurgat of Kenya broke the course record for the half marathon with a time of 1:03:03. Kurgat's time was more than two minutes better than the previous record, which was set by Baldwin native Ryan Sheehan, who ran 1:05:13 last year. Sheehan came in eighth place today.
PG VIDEO: RUNNERS CLUTCH VICTORIESMalika Mejdoub of Morocco won the women's half marathon with a time of 1:14:28, one second better than second-place finisher Aziza Aliyu of Ethiopia.
The race began at 7 a.m. under gray skies and in light rain at Liberty Avenue near Sixth Avenue and will conclude at the finish line near Heinz Field.
About 18,000 runners and walkers are taking part in today's event, which includes the full 26.2 mile marathon, half marathon and marathon relay. About 6,000 are running the marathon.
