Pittsburgh City Council today, at its year-end meeting, overrode two line-item vetoes Mayor Luke Ravenstahl submitted late yesterday, in an effort to ensure that council will have its own attorney within the Law Department, and place streaming video of its meetings on the city Web site.

Both override votes were 7-1, with only Jim Motznik voting to sustain the vetoes.

The two measures cost a combined $122,655, which council moved from the account for buying fuel for city vehicles.

Council President Doug Shields maintained yesterday that the vetoes did not meet the time limits in the city's charter, but he did not press that argument today.

Council sustained a separate veto by Mr. Ravenstahl of legislation setting a March 25 deadline for completion of a new financial recovery plan.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
