Pitt jumped to a 14-point half-time lead and then held on to beat Navy 27-14 in front of a crowd of 55,064 at Heinz Field tonight.

The win marks the first time the Panthers have been 3-0 since the 2000 season and it is only the fourth time in 26 seasons that the Panthers have won their first three games.

Pitt quarterback Bill Stull led the way as he completed 17 of 24 passes for 245 yards and a toiuchdown and freshman Dion Lewis added 79 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.

The Panthers took a 7-0 lead with 8:31 to play in the first quarter on a 6-yard pass from Stull to Oderick Turner.

Ricky Dobbs scored on a 1-yard run to pull Navy into a 7-7 tie but the Panthers responded with a 15-yard touchdown run by Ray Graham to take a 14-7 lead. The Panthers then capitalized on some good field position to take a 21-7 lead right before the half on a 6-yard run by Dion Lewis.

Dan Hutchins kicked a 29-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to extend the Panthers lead to 24-7.

Hutchins kick was the only score of the third quarter and the Midshipmen pulled to within 24-14 early in the fourth on a 4-yard run by Marcus Curry.

That was the last time Navy scored as the Panthers defense brought home the win.
