The Elite Eight banner was raised to the rafters. A video tribute was played. The Petersen Events Center was rocking for opening night.

Then it went silent. For a long time. And then, finally, Pitt decided to give the fans something to cheer about again.

Pitt averted a shocking upset by staging a 13-point, second-half comeback to defeat Wofford, 63-60.

Gary McGhee was the hero. The 6-foot-10 junior scored two huge baskets in the final minutes. Both came on offensive rebounds. The first, a 3-point play with 2:28 remaining gave Pitt a 59-58 lead, its first lead since the opening minutes. The second, with 1:33 left, gave the Panthers a three-point cushion.

Brad Wanamaker led Pitt with 15 points. Wofford led, 54-45, with less than six minutes left, but Wanamaker scored eight points in the final 5:42 to lead the comeback.
