ST. LOUIS -- Paul Maholm pitched 6 2/3 strong innings and led the Pirates to an easy 14-4 win over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium tonight.
The Pirates (26-29) scored four runs in the top of the first inning and five in the top of the third inning as they chased Cardinals' starter Mike Parisi out of the game after only 2 2/3 innings.
Xavier Nady did the damage in the first inning with a three-run double and Luis Rivas, who started for Jack Wilson at shortstop, hit a grand slam in the third to break open the game.
It was the first grand slam by the Pirates since August 28th of last season when Freddie Sanchez hit one against the Reds.
The Pirates belted three homers in the game, the fifth time this season they've accomplished the feat, and also had a season-high 19 hits.
Maholm allowed only four hits and one earned run and got his first road win of the season.
