Pirates sign two to minor league contracts

The Pirates signed catcher and outfielder Jake Fox and right-hander Shairon Martis to minor league contracts, according to Baseball America.

Fox, 29, has played for the Chicago Cubs, Oakland A's and Baltimore Orioles in four major league seasons. He hit .246 with a .313 on-base percentage for the Orioles in 2011.

Martis, 24, has not pitched in the majors since 2009. In 23 starts for Class AA Harrisburg in the Washington Nationals organization last season, he went 8-6 with a 3.05 ERA. He struck out 146 batters in 133 innings.

Baseball America also reported the signings of outfielder Brandon Boggs and first baseman Stefan Welch to minor league deals.

The Pirates announced changes to their scouting department today.

Dave Jauss will become a major league scout and Alvin Rittman, Jim Dedrick and Rob Guzik were named pro scouts.

Juan Mercado will be the Latin America supervisor and Victor Santana will be the Dominican Republic area supervisor.

The team promoted Jim Asher to amateur scouting coordinator and Greg Schilz will become the north regional supervisor. Matt Ruebel will be the national supervisor and Sean Heffernan, Brian Selman and Mike Sansoe were named area supervisors.
