BRADENTON, Fla. -- Manager Jim Tracy yesterday said Jose Bautista will be the Pirates' regular third baseman and that Jose Castillo -- "as of today" -- will be on the club "in a reserve utility role."

Tracy cited what he feels is Bautista's better plate discipline as the reason for making this announcement.

"Mediocrity is not what we're striving for here," Tracy said.

Tracy said National League batting champion Freddy Sanchez would be the regular second baseman. Sanchez played third base most of last season.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
