Kansas City Royals bench coach John Gibbons interviewed with the Pirates today, bringing their total to three candidates with whom they've met in their search to replace John Russell.
Gibbons, 48, marks the second candidates -- Eric Wedge was the other -- with managing experience.
Gibbons went 305-305 with the Toronto Blue Jays. He replaced an ousted Carlos Tosca late in 2004 and went 20-30 the rest of the way. He then steered Toronto to records of 80-82 (third place in the vexing American League East), 87-75 (second) and 83-79 (third). His 2008 club started out 35-39, and he was relieved of his duties.
He has been with the Royals the past two summers.
Former Baltimore Orioles interim manager and coach Juan Samuel expects to interview soon. The Pirates also interviwed Bo Porter, former third base coach of the Arizona Diamondbacks and a candidate for the Florida Marlins vacancy.
