Pirates' Bay, Castillo honored by National League

DENVER - The Pirates turned quite the double play in individual honors today: Left fielder Jason Bay was named National League player of the month, and second baseman Jose Castillo was named the league's player of the week.

Bay became the first member of the Pirates to take the monthly prize since Barry Bonds in September 1992. He had a marvelous May in which he batted .321 (35 for 109) with 12 home runs and 35 RBIs. His home run total was a franchise record for the month, and he homered in six consecutive games May 22-28.

Castillo homered in five consecutive games last week and went 9 for 16 with 14 RBIs.

The Pirates now have won the past three player of the week awards, tying the franchise record for most in a season.

The league began honoring players of the month in 1976, players of the week in 1983.

The Pirates also announced that Bay has risen to ninth place in All-Star voting for outfielders. Bay is slightly more than 33,000 votes behins eighth-placed Barry Bonds. Fans can vote for players and find up-to-date stats for each player by going to http://www.post-gazette.com/allstar/.
