Clases will resume Wednesday in the Penn Hills School District after the district today accepted an offer by the Penn Hills Education Association to return to work.

"This is no indication that we are closer to an agreement. It's a gesture to all parties that we want this thing resolved," said Butch Santicola, spokesman for the Pennsylvania State Education Association and the local union, in a prepared statement. Teachers, who have been working without a contract since the beginning of the school year, went on strike Thursday.

"After a meeting of the leadership this morning, it was decided that returning to school is a good option at this time. We hope the board and community recognize that this decision did not come easily. In fact, there is little to indicate that the board wants a new contract," Santicola said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education had determined that teachers must return to the classroom no later than Thursday to get in 180 days of instruction.
