Penguins re-sign Whitney, bring back Sabourin

The Penguins have given defenseman Ryan Whitney a six-year contract and brought back goalie Dany Sabourin, who spent last season in Vancouver.
Whitney, whose deal is worth $24 million, became a restricted free agent at noon today and said "I'm glad to get it done."
His deal is backloaded, which means Whitney's salary -- believed to be $2.5 million for 2007-08 -- will rise as the contract moves along.
Sabourin, who was the Penguins' most impressive goaltender during training camp last fall before being lost to the Canucks on waivers, received a two-year deal worth $1.025 million.
His return likely snuffs any chance of Jocelyn Thibault re-signing here. Thibault was No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury's backup last season.
