When Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik had some problems with his right groin early last season, he said he wanted to make sure he took care of it properly because the same thing a year earlier progressed to the point that he needed sports hernia surgery on the left side last summer.

Well, that precaution didn't prevent the problem from reoccurring. Orpik had what the Penguins termed successful lower abdomen/hernia surgery on the right side Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Lawrence Biskin performed the surgery. Rehab is expected to take six to eight weeks, which would lead up to the start of training camp.

Orpik and Penguins management were not available for comment.

Orpik, 30, led the Penguins with 194 hits and blocked 94 shots last season.
