The Penguins signed prospect Nick Johnson to a one-year, two-way contract that will pay him $500,000 at the NHL level and less for time spent in the minor leagues.
Johnson, a 24-year-old right winger, played his first six NHL games in the recently concluded season, getting one goal and two points for the Penguins.
With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, the 6-foot-1, 202-pounder was fifth in goals with 16 and points with 43 in 61 games. He led the Baby Penguins with a plus-minus rating of plus-19.
He was drafted by the Penguins in the third round in 2004 and played four seasons at Dartmouth.
