WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- The Penguins fell behind just seconds into the first period and couldn't recover enough to avoid a 2-1 loss to Winnipeg at the MTS Centre Monday night.
The loss extends the Penguins' winless streak to three games. They are 3-2-2.
Winnipeg, meanwhile, won for the first time since the franchise relocated from Atlanta after last season. The Jets are 3-1.
The Penguins played without right winger Tyler Kennedy, who sat because of what coach Dan Bylsma said were "concussion-like symptoms." Winnipeg was missing left winger Evander Kane, who has an unspecified injury.
Winnipeg's Kyle Wellwood gave the Jets a 1-0 lead eight -- yes, eight -- seconds into the game when he beat goalie Marc-Andre Fleury with a close-range backhander.
It was the fastest goal ever scored by a Penguins opponent at the start of a game, breaking the record of nine seconds set by Ross Lonsberry of Philadelphia.
Wellwood's shot capped a slick passing play with Nik Antopov and Alexander Burmistrov that was made possible when Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek, already struggling through a miserable start to the season, lost his balance and fell after the Penguins won the opening faceoff at center ice.
The goal tied the Jets' record for the fastest from the start of a game, which had been set when the franchise was based in Atlanta.
Tanner Glass of Winnipeg lashed a slap shot past Fleury from the slot at 18:27 to make it 2-0.
The goal was made possible when Ben Lovejoy's clearing attempt near the blue line was broken up, and defense partner Kris Letang subsequently lost a battle for possession with Burmistrov along the boards.
Michalek earned a measure of redemption at 18:22, when he beat Pavelec with a slap shot from just inside the blue line for his first of the season. Letang and Matt Cooke, who had bumped Pavelec and could have been called for goalie interference, got assists.
The Penguins will face Minnesota Tuesday night at 7:38 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
