The Penguins have acquired winger Alexei Ponikarovsky from Toronto for minor-league winger Luca Caputi and defenseman Martin Skoula.

Caputi is one of the Penguins' top prospects and Skoula was included in the deal to clear the salary-cap space needed to accommodate a prorated portion of Ponikarovsky's $2,105,000 contract.

Ponikarovsky, who has 19 goals and 22 assists in 61 games, was held out of the Maple Leafs' game against Carolina tonight.

He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after this season, and figures to play on Evgeni Malkin's line.

Ponikarovsky is one of at least two wingers the Penguins showed interest in acquiring as the NHL trade deadline, set for 3 p.,m.

Wednesday, closed in. The other was Raffi Torres of Columbus.
