Overflow crowd attends Rivers Casino jobs fair

More than 4,400 people, many with resumes in hand, packed the David L. Lawrence Convention Center ballroom this morning looking to land a job at the Rivers Casino.
The crowd quickly filled the 1,500 seats in the ballroom and overflowed into the lobby. The overwhelming size of the group caused casino officials to hold a second, impromptu introduction so those who weren't in the ballroom could hear it. Job seekers were greeted with the rock song, "Get Ready." They included a wide range of ages -- those with jobs, unemployed, and at least one retiree looking to get out of the house.
"I'm retired and I decided to look for employment again because I'm bored," said John Thomas, 61, of Economy.
At today's career day, people will have the chance to meet with casino representatives and learn more about the 1,073 jobs that will be available. Another session will be held at 4:30 p.m. No one will be hired today but the casino will accept resumes.
Rivers officials also announced Aug. 5 as the tentative opening for the casino being built on the North Shore.
More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
