Out-of-state deposits to Penn State similar to last year

By at least one measure, Penn State University appears to be holding its luster with prospective students from other parts of the nation, despite the child sex scandal involving a former assistant football coach.
As of this week, prospective students from outside Pennsylvania are putting down deposits with Penn State at a rate equal to this time last year, according to data released today by the university.
As of Monday, 24 percent of the 1,581 applicants who had put down deposits were non-Pennsylvanians, the same percentage as last year at this point, Penn State spokeswoman Annemarie Mountz said today.
Overall, total undergraduate applications of 64,428 are running 2.6 percent ahead of last year, she said.
The university has said in recent weeks that admissions data generally suggest the university has been on pace despite the child sex abuse charges against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
The resulting fallout from those charges cost university president Graham B. Spanier and longtime head football coach Joe Paterno their jobs.
