The Ohio River at Pittsburgh crested at 5 this morning at about 20.5 feet and is expected to fall below 18 feet Sunday evening.

A flood advisory, which was issued by the National Weather Service Thursday, remains in effect.

Rihaan Gangat, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said the cause is the heavy rain in recent days. He said the river level usually is at 16 or 17 feet.

He said the parking spaces at the Mon Wharf begin to flood at 18 feet. At 19 feet, the North Shore riverwalk between the two stadiums begins to flood. At 19.5 feet, the Mon Wharf is completely flooded. At 20 feet, the water is at least a foot deep in the lower areas of the North Shore riverwalk. If the water level had reached 21 feet, Downtown sewers would have backed up.

About 12 hours after the advisory is lifted, the level is expected to fall to about 17 feet.
