Some members of the grassroots movement known as Occupy Pittsburgh appear this morning to be pulling out of their encampment on BNY Mellon's property. Others appear determined to remain at the site along Grant Street, where they have been since October.
An Allegheny County Common Pleas judge issued an order last week that the encampment be broken down. The judge had determined that the occupation of the park is causing BNY Mellon "immediate and irreparable harm."
The judge gave the occupiers three days to get out once BNY Mellon files a $10,000 bond with the court.
The bank filed a motion for a preliminary injunction in December, arguing that the occupiers were trespassing and creating a nuisance at the small park sandwiched between Grant and Ross streets, Downtown.
While some of the protesters appear to be clearing out today, others seem intent on staying put. Matt Wheeler, 29, of South Side, said he doesn't intend to take down his tent. Bram Reichbaum, of the North Side, said he believes "some people may want to be led away."
