The North Allegheny School District's preliminary budget shows a tax increase of 1.29 mills, but several potential savings and revenue sources are still unknown.

School board members Wednesday approved the $126,681,725 budget by an 8-1 vote with Ralph Pagone dissenting. The tax rate was set at 21.55 mills.

Some items still to be determined are the financial impact of an early retirement incentive offered to teachers, state gaming monies and other revenue-producing ventures. Those include an electronic newsletter with ads and shopping links that will provide a percentage of the purchases made by people who access retailers through the district website.

State gaming monies alone, if received, would lower the millage by 0.55 mills, said Mike Hopkins, district finance manager.

The board will introduce a proposed final budget in May and vote on it in June. If the preliminary millage rate stands, a resident whose home is assessed at $200,000 would pay $4,310 per year in taxes.
