A new Walmart Supercenter will open Wednesday in North Huntingdon.

The store, set to open at 7 a.m., comes after a years-long process of review by the North Huntingdon commissioners and public hearings before the North Huntingdon planning commission.

During the process, some residents of Irwin, North Huntingdon and North Irwin concern over Walmart and a pricing policy that might drive locally owned stores out of business. Other residents, especially senior citizens, said they wanted a local Walmart with a low-cost grocery store because they have trouble paying full price for groceries.

At Wednesday night's meeting of the North Huntingdon commissioners, Commissioner Rich Gray said he is excited about the opening. He said he is one of the few commissioners who have served during the entire duration of the approximately 10-year-long planning process for the store.

Lee Moffatt, president of the board, said he feels the new store will be good for the community. He said the store will strengthen the local tax base.
