Hundreds of cyclists, skaters and walkers celebrated the official opening of a new section of the Great Allegheny Passage trail today in the Mon Valley.

The three-mile segment goes from Grant Avenue in Duquesne to The Waterfront and features two bridges over active railroad lines.

Dignitaries raised ceremonial railroad crossing gates at the ramp to one of the new spans in Whitaker.

"It's truly a work of engineering art," said Linda Boxx, president of the Allegheny Trail Alliance.

The opening leaves one incomplete piece of the 150-mile GAP trail connecting Pittsburgh and Cumberland, Md.
