A new bridge on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail has opened.

"This span is vital to the economic vitality of the Laurel Highlands area and the diverse, all-season recreational enjoyment it provides," said Richard Allan, state secretary of conservation and natural resources.

The $1.3 million bridge, which spans the Pennsylvania Turnpike, opened Saturday.

The old bridge, built in 1970, was closed in December 2009 after an inspection found it in danger of failing. The closure, between trail mileposts 36 and 37, effectively cut the 70-mile trail in two because there is no other way to cross the turnpike.
