With the new arena will come new Zambonis.
The city-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority board gave the Penguins permission today to buy two new ice-resurfacing machines from Zamboni at a cost of $161,848 for use in the Consol Energy Center, which is scheduled for completion in August.
The new machines will be a greener version of the venerable Zamboni. They will be fueled by propane, not gasoline, making for lower emissions. The two machines now in use at Mellon Arena are 16 to 18 years old. Because they use gasoline, they must be fueled outside. The propane-driven Zambonis can be fueled inside.
