Shenango Inc., which operates a coke works on Neville Island, has been fined $114,000 for air pollution violations and ordered to submit a plan to eliminate excessive fugitive emissions from its coke ovens.
Jim Thompson, manager of the Allegheny County Health Department Air Quality Program who announced the fine, characterized the violations as "significant exceedances" of county emissions standards.
"Shenango has been cited 114 times since the beginning of the year for excessive emissions that contribute to increased levels of fine particulates and hazardous air pollutions," he said. "The emissions occur during pushing operations, when hot incandescent coke is removed from an oven and transported to the quenching station."
The order requires the company to submit a plan by Sept. 26 that details actions already underway and that will be taken in the future to bring and keep coke oven operations in compliance with county air quality regulations. The plan must include a timetable with completion dates for each corrective measure.
The plant, which produces coke and various byproducts, consists of one coke oven battery made up of 56 ovens and processes about 1,500 tons of coal per day.
