Allegheny County homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in the woods behind a West Mifflin apartment building by officers who were searching for a missing man.
The man was identified as 43-year-old David Loftin of Hazelwood, said the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office. It was unclear if this was the same man police were looking for when they came upon the body.
Sgt. Scott Scherer of the county police homicide unit said detectives are investigating his death as a homicide and believe they know where the crime took place but divulged few other details.
West Mifflin police Chief Ken Davies said a man, who he declined to identify, was reported missing Monday night. Police set out to search for him in the woods behind the Monview Apartment complex after information led them there, Chief Davies said.
They discovered Mr. Loftin's body at around 9 a.m. and summoned county homicide detectives, who are now handling the case.
The medical examiner's office said an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
