A Bethel Park man pleaded guilty today to homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter in the death of his ex-girlfriend's husband.
Jason Kasper, 37, will be sentenced May 21 by Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge David R. Cashman. His defense attorney, Patrick Thomassey said that his client's guideline range would call for 12 months incarceration in the standard range.
Mr. Kasper was accused of killing John "Jack" Pavlick on Nov. 1, 2009, by hitting him with his car in the front yard of the Pavlick home in Bethel Park.
Mr. Pavlick was trapped under the car and though neighbors attempted to lift the vehicle with jacks, the ground was too soft.
According to the prosecution, Mr. Kasper had been dating Mr. Pavlick's wife, Tracy, while the couple was separated. Ms. Pavlick began to reconcile with her husband and broke off the relationship with Mr. Kasper.
On Oct. 31, 2009, Jack and Tracy Pavlick had been out together at a Halloween party. Mr. Kasper was there. The couple invited Mr. Kasper to go to another bar with them, but prosecutors said he showed up at their home instead.
Mr. Kasper rang the doorbell and asked Ms. Pavlick if she was going to leave her husband, Assistant District Attorney Lisa S. Carey said. Mr. Kasper tried to enter the home and he and Mr. Pavlick ended up wrestling in the front yard.
At one point, the prosecutor said, Mr. Kasper got in his vehicle, backed up and hit a tree. Mr. Pavlick kicked Mr. Kasper's car door, and stood in front of the vehicle.
Mr. Kasper floored it.
