A Collier man who had been threatening to kill himself fell off a cliff last night during a struggle with a police officer.
Tim Scully, 48, was hospitalized after he fell about 30 feet.
Police were called to his house at about 7:30 p.m. in the Rennerdale section of the township after his brother called 911 to say Mr. Scully was threatening suicide. When officers arrived, Mr. Scully ran off. Sgt. Brian Halbleib later caught up to him in a wooded area about a mile from Mr. Scully's house.
There, police said, Mr. Scully threw a log at the sergeant, who then used his Taser to subdue him. After the effects of the Taser wore off, Sgt. Halbleib tried to handcuff him but said Mr. Scully resisted. During the scuffle, police said, Mr. Scully tumbled off the cliff and nearly took the officer with him, but Sgt. Halbleib managed to save himself by grabbing a tree.
Mr. Scully was being treated at UPMC Presbyterian this morning. His condition was not available, but police said they were told last night that he may be paralyzed.
