The first artists to be designated Flight School Fellows were announced today by Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.

Flight School is a program designed to help artists advance their careers through the expertise of the New York-based nonprofit Creative Capital and mentoring by Pittsburgh artists and professionals. It is administered at Pittsburgh Filmmakers in Oakland.

The 2011 recipients of the eight-week fellowships are Stephanie Armbruster, Lenka Clayton, David English, Vanessa German, Ben Hernstrom, Elizabeth Hoover, Justin Hopper, Christopher Ivey, Kelli Stevens Kane, Anya Martin, Anna Mikolay, David Montano, Emily Newman, Derek Parker, Hallie Pritts, Anne Roecklein, Jae Ruberto, James Rugg, Julie Sokolow and R. Weis.

The Flight School Fellowship is the result of research done at Carnegie Mellon University that produced the 2008 Creative Entrepreneurs Report, which included strategies to support individual regional artists.

"A lot of eyes are on both the Fellows and Pittsburgh as Flight School has the potential to become a national model," said director Courtney Ehrlichman in a press release.

The fellowship is supported by the Fine Foundation, the Heinz Endowments, the Pittsburgh Foundation and Creative Capital.
