Allegheny County has received a $10 million federal grant to build a flyover ramp to connect the Rankin Bridge to the former Carrie Furnace development site in Rankin, Braddock, Swissvale and Pittsburgh.
The grant, announced this afternoon by U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., and Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills, will allow the county to build a connection between the recently renovated bridge and the 168-acre development site.
The county bought the site for $5.75 million from Cleveland developer Park Corp. in 2005 and has been preparing it for development since it was added to the state's brownfield development program.
County Executive Dan Onorato called the flyover ramp "the last piece of the puzzle" needed before construction can begin on an office/light industrial park at the site.
