A federal judge declined motions to acquit former coroner Dr. Cyril H. Wecht yesterday.

Ruling on a renewed motion for acquittal by Dr. Wecht's attorneys, U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab wrote that the defense had largely just repackaged previous arguments.

Dr. Wecht, 77, of Squirrel Hill was charged on 41 counts of theft and fraud. His trial ended last month after jurors failed to reach a verdict on any of the counts.

Judge Schwab also denied a defense motion to suppress evidence in a second trial, originally scheduled to begin Tuesday. That trial has been postponed while the 3rd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals considers a motion by Dr. Wecht's attorneys seeking to dismiss the case on grounds of double jeopardy.
