A Johnstown man was arrested in Maryland today after police said he accidentally gave his girlfriend a fatal dose of methadone while she was being treated in an Indiana County hospital this summer.

Aaron Sandak, 36, now faces charges of drug delivery resulting in death, criminal use of a communication facility, involuntary manslaughter and recklessly endangering another person.

State police charged that Mr. Sandak gave 29-year-old Megan Prugh methadone on Aug. 26, the day she was set to be released from the Indiana Regional Medical Center. Ms. Prugh had been in the hospital receiving treatment for a condition that authorities did not disclose.

Indiana County coroner Michael Baker ruled the death an accident.

State police in Indiana, with help from officials throughout the state and in Maryland and Virginia, tracked Mr. Sandak to Ocean City, Md., where he was arrested today. Mr. Sandak is currently in the Worcester County jail in Maryland awaiting extradition.
