HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Employees are still determining what caused a fire a Mercer County ice cream cone plant.

David George, president of the Joy Cone Co. in Hermitage, said the fire shut down the plant from about 9 p.m. Monday until about 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The plant makes cake ice cream cones. Larger scrap pieces are broken up and sent to a scrap silo, while smaller pieces are gathered into a dust collector, which is what caught fire Monday night.

Mr. George says it's still not clear what caused the fire. The plant has three other dust collectors and is operating normally.

A damage estimate won't be available until officials determine whether the device that caught fire can be salvaged. There was no damage to other areas of the plant about 60 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.
