Former Auditor General Barbara Hafer confirmed today that she had decided to enter the race to succeed Rep. Jack Murtha in the 12th Congressional District.

Ms. Hafer told the Post-Gazette last week that she was considering the race. Today, she said that after conferring with Democratic leaders in the district, she had decided to go forward.

She said, however, that one thing that would change her mind against a candidacy would be if the late congressman's widow, Joyce Murtha, were to decide to run for the seat.

"I wouldn't run against Joyce,'' she said.

Mrs. Murtha's potential candidacy has been the subject of speculation but she has not commented on any political issues as her family prepares to bury the veteran congressman Tuesday.
