Former Pitt head football coach Walt Harris was hired by the University of Akron as that team's quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.

Harris was being considered for the Panthers' open offensive coordinator job, but a return never materialized.

At Akron, Harris will join the staff of J.D. Brookhart, who was Pitt's offensive coordinator under Harris from 1999-2003.

With Harris off the board and the candidacy of Jets receivers coach Noel Mazzone fading, Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt is hoping to lure California offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti, son of the former West Virginia and IUP coach of the same name, back to his home town.
