WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. -- In late December, West Deptford (N.J.) defensive tackle Jamil Pollard became the first player to commit to Penn State since the Jerry Sandusky scandal began in early November.
On Wednesday, in his gymnasium at West Deptford High, Pollard made his decision to be a Nittany Lion official when he signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Penn State.
Pollard, who stands 6 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs 290 pounds, is rated a four-star recruit and the No. 20 defensive tackle in the nation by Rivals.com.
He committed to Penn State on Dec. 29 -- before the school had named Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien as head coach.
It is rare for a player to commit to a school that doesn't have a head coach.
"You pick a school based on how the program is and what it always will be," Pollard said.
Pollard picked Penn State over Boston College.
