Fire destroyed a vacant three-story house undergoing renovations in Mount Oliver last night.
Allegheny County Deputy Fire Marshal Mike Shawley said the fire started in the basement at 18 Elizabeth St. shortly after 7 p.m. and is believed to have been an accident. The fire worked its way to the roof and the house was a total loss, Mr. Shawley said.
Mount Oliver fire Chief Fran Kestner said firefighters from at least six responding companies had difficulty battling the blaze because of overhead wires, which made it hard to get ladder trucks in position to reach the fire once it reached the roof.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. One firefighter fell through a hole in the floor of the house but was not injured.
