Penguins center Sidney Crosby has been named newsmaker of the year -- sports and otherwise -- in his native Canada by Maclean's magazine, that country's equivalent of Time.

According to Candian network TSN, the magazine specifically cited Crosby's gold medal-winning overtime goal against the United States at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. It said Crosby's moment was on a "higher plane" than the wars, natural disasters and political upheavals of 2010 and that the goal united Canadians and dwarfed Crosby's other achievements, such as the 2009 Stanley Cup and NHL major awards.

Crosby, 23, is from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia.
