Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Mark Roosevelt today said the district, overall, made more progress this year on the state reading and math tests known as the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment.

However, Mr. Roosevelt said he's not optimistic that the district improved enough to make the federal performance standard known as "adequate yearly progress."

The state reading and math tests are given to public school students in grade 11 and grades 3 through 8. The state hasn't yet released scores; Mr. Roosevelt decided to release Pittsburgh's early.

He said most of the tested grades increased proficiency in one or both subjects. Only on three tests -- third-grade reading, third-grade math and 11th-grade math -- did the district lose ground.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
