City schools amend '50 percent' grade policy

The Pittsurgh Public Schools has amended a controversial grading system that gave students no less than 50 percent for any work they performed.
The policy had some students refusing to do or re-do work, saying they'd take the 50 percent instead.
The district today said it will give a zero to students who refuse to do work. In all other cases, the minimum grade will remain a 50 percent, provided the student makes a good-faith effort, the district said.
Officials said the policy had been in place for about a decade. But the district unleashed a wave of protest from teachers and parents after a memo last fall sought strict enforcement of the policy.
