CCAC leads community colleges in nursing graduates

The Community College of Allegheny County graduated more registered nurses last year than any other two-year college in the country, according to a newly released report by Community College Week magazine.
The report, using information from the 2009-10 school year, lists 412 registered-nursing graduates at CCAC. The community college is far ahead of its closest Pennsylvania competitor, Harrisburg Area Community College.
CCAC spokesman David Hoovler said Pittsburgh's status as a medical hub plays a role in the school's nursing popularity.
"Most [nursing graduates] come from, and go back to, the region," Mr. Hoovler said. Many graduates go on to work at UPMC and West Penn Health System facilities.
The report also revealed that CCAC ranks second nationally for other health-related programs. Only Cuyahoga Community College in Ohio produced more associate degrees in healthcare.
