Parishes in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh will take up a collection this weekend for victims of the tornadoes in the South.

The money will be distributed through Catholic Charities, which is already providing aid in devasated towns.

In a letter to pastors, Bishop David Zubik cited the example of St. Therese of Lisieux parish in Cleveland, Tenn., which has become a shelter for many who lost their homes in that community.

"The recent tornadoes and storms took so many lives when they cut such a terrible swath of destruction through the South. The survivors need our help, not only to rebuild their homes, but to rebuild their lives," he wrote.
