Gamblers no longer will have to wager at least $80 to get free parking in the Rivers Casino garage during Steeler game days.
Now customers who gamble any amount of money will receive free parking at the garage during football games. During Thursday's preseason game, players had to wager at least $80 at slot machines in order to get free parking and avoid a $50 fee. The casino also has decided to drop the garage fee on Steeler game days from $50 to $20 for those fans who don't gamble.
The moves came after the casino, during its first week of operation, posted its worst day in terms of revenues on Thursday, the day of the preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals.
"We're open seven days and the worst day of the week was Steeler day. You don't have to hit us over the head too many times with a two-by-four," Rivers President Ed Fasulo said. "That was the first test for us. We saw what happened. We realized what happened. We realized what some of the perceptions were. We wanted to change that."
The casino will make the change even though only one person paid the $50 fee out of more than 1,600 parkers on Thursday, Mr. Fasulo said.
On non-game days, parking is free at the casino this month. Mr. Fasulo said it will continue to be free for customers after that regardless of the amount they wager. There may be a fee for commuters who use the garage but don't visit the casino.
