Metropolitan Nicholas of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese of the U.S.A. died Sunday after a long battle with cancer. He was 75 and had been bishop of the Johnstown-based diocese since 1985.

Metropolitan Nicholas worked to preserve the liturgical traditions of the Carpathian mountain villages of Eastern Europe and to rebuild relationships with the Byzantine Catholic Church, from which his church split in the 1930s.
