As of today, Beechview residents again have a new full-service supermarket. The new IGA at 1616 Broadway Ave. was flooded with shoppers ahead of the 9 a.m. speeches, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The neighborhood had been without a supermarket for more than a year. The former Foodland closed last summer.
Ron Levick, who owns the IGA in Oakland, which is three years old, joined with grocer Wayne Hancock in establishing the Beechview IGA. With help from the state and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, they have made a $1.5 million investment and hired back 18 former Foodland employees.
"I have been waiting for this," said Rodia Branch, who lives within walking distance. "It looks so nice and everything is fresh."
