The state Game Commission is investigating the fatal shooting of a bald eagle in Butler County.

The Game Commission says someone shot the bald eagle, which was about 7 months old, earlier this month and it lived for about a week before dying.

Wildlife conservation officer Chip Brunst doubts the shooting was an accident, saying it would be difficult to mistake it for a duck or goose.

The shooter faces state punishment of jail for up to six months and a fine of between $500 and $2,500. Violating the Bald Eagle Protection Act is punishable by up to a year in federal prison and a $5,000 fine.
