American Eagle Outfitters Inc. has signed a franchise agreement with a company that plans to open stores in Japan. Sumikin Bussan Corp. is expected to open the first store in Tokyo's Harajuku shopping district in 2012.
Earlier this year, the South Side teen retail chain opened its first locations outside North America, with franchise stores in Dubai and Kuwait.
"Japan is one of the most important international markets for retail and home to millions of fashion-conscious young people," said CEO Jim O'Donnell in this morning's announcement.
The chain has been looking for ways to continue growing since its namesake clothing chain has limited room to add locations in the U.S. market. The international push comes in addition to efforts to start other chains, including lingerie and dormwear line aerie and a children's clothing store called 77kids by american eagle.
