Academics to keep Penn State quarterback on bench

CHICAGO -- Penn State third-string quarterback Paul Jones likely will miss the 2011 season due to academics.
Coach Joe Paterno confirmed the news today prior to the Big Ten Conference's kickoff luncheon.
Jones, 6 feet 3 and 245 pounds, has struggled academically since graduating from Sto-Rox High School and enrolling early at Penn State in January 2010.
He was rated the No. 2 prep quarterback in the country by Scout.com as a high school senior.
With Jones out, Penn State's No. 3 quarterback likely will be either junior Kevin Newsome or redshirt junior Shane McGregor, a former walk-on.
Sophomore Rob Bolden and redshirt junior Matt McGloin, another former walk-on, will compete for the starting job when preseason practice opens Thursday.
