About 700 people from local unions and faith organizations marched to the Greenfield Bridge today to call for jobs and restoration of the American dream.

The group of union members, unemployed residents and Occupy Pittsburgh campers marched from Magee Field in Greenfield, where they initially gathered, to the bridge close to 4 p.m. They used the bridge, which has been deemed structurally unsound, as a symbol for a system they say is likewise in squalor. Almost 40 other groups staged a similar protest on structurally deficient bridges across the country.

"Instead of doing something, we put a Band-Aid on it." said Richard Freeman of Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network, speaking of bridge.

The marchers were at times almost evangelical, chanting, "We are marching across Pittsburgh bridges, demanding jobs right now."

Others shouted in unison, "Give me a job, I'll fix it" and "We are the 99 percent" as they looked out over the bridge toward the traffic below.
