Celebrations Spotlight: Elinore and William Hughes
William (Bill) and Elinore Hughes celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on September 12, 2012. The couple has four children: Bill, Sharon (deceased), Lynn and Allyn, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They reside in Ingram.
Q: How did you meet?
Elinore: Bill and I met in sixth grade when he moved from Esplen to Sheraden, so we've known each other most of our lives.
Q: Who introduced you?
Bill: We had a lot of mutual friends and went to the same parties, but didn't start dating until we were in ninth grade.
Q: Where did you each grow up?
Bill and Elinore: We both grew up in Sheraden.
Q: Where were you married? Why did you choose that site?
Bill: Kansas City, Missouri. I was there attending aircraft mechanics training for the Army. I asked Elinore to marry me and move to Kansas City.
Q: What was your favorite wedding memory?
Elinore: I loved living in Kansas City. It was so clean compared to Pittsburgh.
Q: Do you still own any of your wedding gifts? If so, what?
Elinore: We didn't receive any wedding gifts because it was wartime and we were away from home.
Q: What is the secret to your successful marriage?
Bill (jokingly): I'm such a nice guy to put up with Elinore all of these years.
Q: What activities do you enjoy doing most as a couple?
Elinore: Dancing and going out with friends.
Q: How did you celebrate your anniversary?
Elinore: We will go out to dinner with our family members who live in Pittsburgh.
